We recently finished a unique project in Reston Town Center in Reston, VA. Typically, we are called out to look at lighting someone’s home or landscape. Back in March we received a call to see if we could give a proposal for adding lights to an already-built terrace on the third floor of a premier condominium building. The walls were all brick and the floor was all stone. The challenge was increased when we were told they wanted light fixtures on the wall shining down and they did not want to see wires and conduit run to each fixture.
During a nighttime demonstration, we also showed them how up lighting some columns inside the pavilion would supply the perfect amount of indirect light and give them a stunning effect on their terrace.
We wanted the fixtures to match the decorum of the building, so we chose a brushed nickel fixture. Each fixture had a 3.7 watt LED. Lighting two separate terraces in the building, we only used 40 watts of energy.
We began the project by removing the grout from a line of bricks. We were able to run our 16-gauge low voltage wire inside the grout line and had a mason come out and replace the grout. When we finished you could not tell where we hid the wire.
The flooring had a 6″ gap between the floor and the stone tiles that were laid. We were able to run the wires to each location and simply drill through the stone to mount our nickel finished LED up lights.
We hope the lighting provides safety and aesthetic for the residents of Midtown at Reston Town Center Condominium. We also hope that the lighting can help create a relaxing mood for the residents to come home and unwind on their terrace.
